Let's not call it science.

Let's not call it science because then we're arguing about definitions and judging the importance of the knowledge to be gained by standards for a different structure of learning.

Folk wisdom is patronizing.

Do the Maori have a term for this body of knowledge?

It is not just the Maori who applied logic and reason to the problems of their lives. We've lost a great deal of learning because people didn't understand that.

I found this statement on the internet:

In a traditional sense, mātauranga Māori refers to the knowledge, comprehension or understanding of everything visible or invisible that exists within the universe.

Apparently the word mātauranga now means education but in the past meant accumulated knowledge. So you get:

mātauranga kararehe

which means zoology.
